Introduction ||This journey takes you into the highland landscapes of North Sikkim, where steep mountain cliffs, verdant rhododendron valleys, natural hot springs, perennial snowfields, and elevated plateaus define the Trans-Himalayan terrain. As part of a broader trekking Sikkim experience, this route captures the elevation diversity and dramatic ecological transitions characteristic of authentic Himalaya trekking.
Staying in Lachen and Lachung — two small villages located at 2,800 meters and home to Tibeto-Bhutia communities — you gain access to higher niches of the Himalayas near the Indo-Tibet border. Excursions to Yumthang and Yumesamdong lead through vibrant rhododendron valleys and expansive yak pastures, landscapes that mirror the remoteness found in classic North Sikkim trek routes. The terrain shifts between alpine meadows and high-altitude plateaus, reinforcing the distinctive atmosphere of advanced Sikkim trekking environments.
A defining highlight of this high-altitude itinerary is the visit to Gurudongmar Lake at 5,500 meters, one of the world’s highest glacial lakes. Set against stark mountain backdrops, the lake adds a dramatic alpine element to this Himalaya trekking landscape and underscores the elevation range that makes trekking Sikkim uniquely compelling.
(Being marked as a sensitive zone on the Indo Tibet border, the areas can be visited with a special permit. In few spots on this route, non-Indian passport holders are not permitted to visit)
