Kaziranga National Park

An Indian Serengeti
Recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1985, Kaziranga National Park stands as one of the most significant centres of wildlife tourism in Assam. Spread across vast grasslands and flood plains shaped by the mighty Brahmaputra, the park supports a remarkable concentration of wildlife, migratory birds, and diverse ecological habitats that make it globally distinctive.
Kaziranga National Park is internationally renowned as the stronghold of the One-Horned Rhino, with more than 70 per cent of the world’s population of this iconic species protected within its boundaries. This singular distinction has made Kaziranga a focal point for conservation efforts and one of the most visited wildlife reserves in India. The park’s grassland ecosystem provides ideal conditions for the rhinos, allowing visitors to observe them at close range in their natural habitat.
Beyond the One-Horned Rhino, wildlife in Kaziranga National Park thrives due to the complex ecological balance of its flood plains, wetlands, and forested areas. Covering approximately 470 square kilometres, the park is dominated by alluvial grasslands interspersed with marshes, streams, and patches of woodland fed by seasonal flooding from the Brahmaputra River. These recurring floods enrich the soil, sustain lush vegetation, and support a wide range of species.
Kaziranga National Park also harbours more than 60 per cent of India’s wild buffalo population, alongside Indian Bison, Asian Elephants, Swamp Deer, Hog Deer, Sambar, Sloth Bear, Hoolock Gibbon, and Capped Langur. Predatory species such as Tiger, Leopard, Leopard Cat, Jungle Cat, Hog Badger, and Jackal form an essential part of the food chain, reinforcing the park’s ecological integrity.
