East Sikkim Silk Route Mountain Biking Tour

A High-Altitude Himalayan Cycling Journey Along the Old Silk Route

There is only one place in India where a mountain bike route follows a road built for Tibetan trade caravans, climbs to 4,000 metres along the Indo-China border, passes a battlefield where British and Tibetan forces clashed in 1903, and descends through alpine lakes to a Himalayan capital — all in a single week. This is the East Sikkim Silk Route mountain biking circuit, and it is unlike anything else on the Indian cycling map.

Open to Indian nationals only due to the sensitive border zone permits required beyond Rongli, this route remains genuinely unexplored by the mass cycling market and entirely uncommercialized in character — exactly what makes it extraordinary for serious riders seeking the most dramatic high-altitude biking in Sikkim.

The Route Through East Sikkim and the Himalayan Borderlands

Kalimpong to Lava — Into the Eastern Himalayas

The journey begins in Kalimpong — once one of the most important trade towns in the eastern Himalayas, where Tibetan wool and musk met Indian cotton and spices in a commerce that defined the pre-partition economy of the region. The colonial architecture and the Buddhist monasteries of this Lepcha hill town carry the weight of that history quietly, and a morning exploration before the biking begins sets the cultural context for a route that is as much a historical journey as a physical one.

The first day's ride to Lava climbs through dense pine forests with minimal traffic — exactly the offbeat biking route character that defines this entire circuit — to a mystique hilltop village at the edge of the virgin Neora Valley National Park, where the evening brings Kanchenjunga sunset views and the silence of a mountain forest undisturbed by tourist traffic.

Aritar and the Remote Forests of Pangolakha

From Lava, the route descends through the Reshi River valley and crosses the Bengal–Sikkim border at Aritar — one of the oldest settlements in East Sikkim, historically positioned on the ancient trade road to Jelep La and Nathu La. The Silk Route cycling character of this journey becomes increasingly apparent as the terrain grows wilder and the traffic thins to almost nothing.

The climb from Aritar toward Phadamchen gains significant altitude through isolated rural East Sikkim — small markets, forested hillslopes, and the unmistakable atmospheric change of approaching the high Himalayas. Phadamchen itself, deep in the forests of Pangolakha, is prime red panda habitat and one of the finest birdwatching locations on the entire route. A village homestay here provides a warmth and simplicity entirely proportional to the remoteness of the setting.

Zuluk Hairpin Bends and Nathang Valley

The ascent to Zuluk and Nathang Valley is the tour's defining challenge and its most celebrated section. From Phadamchen, the road climbs through constant uphill switchbacks to Zuluk — a foggy village at 2,800 metres perched on a ridgeline with the entire Kanchenjunga range dominating the left horizon — before the legendary Zuluk hairpin bends begin.

With 32 consecutive sharp turns carved into the mountain face, the Zuluk loops are among the most technically demanding and visually spectacular stretches of mountain road biking in India, and the Thambi View Point above them — where the full sequence of hairpin bends is visible below in a single panorama — is a sight that justifies the climb entirely.

Rare Himalayan Monal pheasants are commonly spotted on this trail, and red panda sightings are not impossible in the surrounding forest. The road continues through sub-alpine rhododendron zones to Lungthu and then descends to Nathang Valley at 3,800 metres — a high-altitude Tibetan yak pasture that transforms through seasons from golden grassland to snow-buried plateau, its Buddhist prayer flags the only colour against an enormous open sky.

Kupup, Tsongo Lake, and the Descent to Gangtok

The final biking day to Gangtok is the longest and the most dramatic in its range. The initial climb to Kupup at 4,000 metres follows the historic road toward Lhasa via Jelep La — a route marched by traders, soldiers, and diplomats for centuries and closed since 1962.

The war memorial at Tukla, site of the fierce 1903 battle between British and Tibetan forces during the Younghusband expedition, provides a sobering historical pause before the descent. Alpine lakes — Kupup Lake, Bedang Tso, and the Tsongo Basin — appear in succession along the high-altitude road, their surfaces reflecting the sky and the surrounding peaks in a stillness that contrasts sharply with the physical effort of the preceding days.

The descent through Kyongsla Alpine Sanctuary, rich with rare Himalayan birds and mammals and ablaze with rhododendron in spring, carries the route down to Tsongo Lake and the final kilometres into Gangtok — completing one of the most demanding and rewarding high-altitude mountain biking tours in Sikkim available to Indian riders.

Practical Information for Riders

Practical Notes for Riders

  • Permits are required beyond Rongli — these are Inner Line Permits for the restricted border zone and must be arranged in advance through a registered operator.
  • Road conditions on the Silk Route are mostly paved with rough patches throughout; surfaces deteriorate at higher altitudes in winter.
  • The best time for this Sikkim bike trip is October to December for clear skies and dry roads, and April to May for rhododendron forests in bloom — both avoiding the monsoon season (June to September) when roads become hazardous.
  • Maximum altitude of 4,000 metres at Kupup requires good baseline fitness and prior experience at high altitude.
  • This tour is graded strenuous to challenging and is suited for experienced riders only.
  • Indian nationals only — foreign nationals are not permitted in the restricted border zone areas of this circuit.
Steep and challenging terrain is suitable only for experienced bikers, and at this moment, only Indian Nationals are permitted to go on this tour.
