Pedong

A Land with Lepcha History
Pedong, an old settlement for Lepcha people in Kalimpong hills with historical significance, is located on India and Tibet's ancient trade route. With the backdrop of snow mountains, beautiful pine forests, refreshing countryside, exciting nature walks and old monasteries and churches, Pedong is fast developing as a holiday destination in the hidden Kalimpong Hills.
A stunning journey to the ancient trade route to Tibet, popular as the Silk Route, originates from here. Pedong, the land of fir trees, according to the local language, is predominantly a Lepcha territory, which saw a fierce battle with Bhutanese force during the mid-nineteenth century. The Lepcha King Gaybu A-Chyuk, lost the battle and life here, near a fort - The Damsang Guri. Lying deep inside a forest, the fort, although in ruins, is riddled with history. A popular short hike from Pedong for about 30 min leads to the fort. Built in the year 1690 by the Lepcha people, the fort bears the ancient stories of Lepcha life.
