Introduction || This short and compact tour for six days will cover two very important and lesser-known Birding Areas of East Sikkim – Pangolakha and Kyongnosla Sanctuary. We will start our journey from Kolakham, another important birding destination in the northern part of Bengal, perched below Neora Valley National Park. From Lava, our birding route will follow the ancient trade route between Kalimpong and Tibet, popularly known as Silk Route and reach Gangtok via Nathula, on the Indo-China border. The areas along the Zuluk – Nathang Valley – Bedang Tso basin along the edge of Bhutan and China-Tibet have an excellent avifauna habitat, many of which are threatened or nearly-threatened high-altitude Himalayan birds. Eurasian Woodcock, Wood Snipe, Giant Babax and Tibetan Eared Pheasant are the most critically endangered species recorded in this area. The stretch between Zuluk and Nathang Valley is perhaps the best place to see the Himalayan Monal in flight.
Apart from rich birdlife, the area is also known for its Red Panda and musk deer habitat, and they are not very rare to be seen on this route. The stunning landscape beauty with snow mountain range and alpine lakes make the birding experience even more attractive. During the trip, our stay will be in simple homestays with basic amenities, except in Gangtok, where we will end the journey in a nice hotel.
Due to the proximity to China Border, the Indian Army has restricted movement to any Non-Indian Nationals on this road, and this tour is possible only for Indian Passport holders.
